Step 1
Make sure the optical computer mouse you buy runs on your computer's operating system. Most new computer systems handle almost any type of computer mouse. However, some older computer systems may not operate the software that comes with the optical mouse. Check the compatibility requirements on the computer mouse packaging when you shop for it.
-
Step 2
Install the computer software that comes with the mouse. The software has components, or instructions, for the computer to use the optical mouse.
-
Step 3
Get a feel for the optical computer mouse at the store where you buy it. Many stores have floor models that you can grab and feel in your hand. Pick it up, move it around and make sure it isn't too bulky, or too small for your hand.
-
Step 4
Buy a mouse pad if you don't already have one. Although a mouse pad isn't a complete necessity for using an optical computer mouse, the mouse pad provides enhanced control and movement of the computer mouse.
-
Step 5
Maintain the optical computer mouse. Clean the optical computer mouse often to remove any dirt that has accumulated on the soft pads with a mild soap and water. You can also use isopropyl alcohol to clean the pads.
