Things You'll Need:
- Tall sunflowers
- Garden twine
- Landscaping cloth or heavy burlap
-
Step 1
Choose a spot in the garden that gets plenty of sun. Sunflowers thrive in full sun and need at least 6 hours to grow healthy.
-
Step 2
Plant the sunflowers in a circle-shaped bed at the beginning of the growing season. Push the sunflower seed down into the soil about a half-inch to deter birds and wildlife from eating them.
-
Step 3
Keep the sunflowers well watered especially during hot days. Water them soon after planting and keep the soil watered during the first several weeks until the sunflower sprouts emerge. Continue watering the sunflowers at least an inch a week until harvest.
-
Step 4
Purchase some twine or other heavy string. Use a garden twine that breaks down after one season to save on time during spring clean up.
-
Step 5
Tie one end of the twine to the stem of one sunflower. Tie it just below the head of the sunflower. Find the opposite sunflower in the circle. Bring the sunflower in so that the heads of the sunflowers meet. This will form the roof of the sunflower haven.
-
Step 6
Finish tying all the sunflowers together. Add some mulch or heavy burlap to form a floor under the sunflower haven.
