Step 1
Ask for a referral from your primary care physician. If you are seeking a dietitian for diabetes or other reasons such as obesity, your doctor and your dietitian should be on the same page as to your diet and nutrition needs. You might also need the referral depending on your health insurance coverage.
-
Step 2
Find out if your insurance company covers your visits to your dietitian. Chances are they will for medical purposes, but it is better to find that out beforehand.
-
Step 3
Make a list of questions for the dietitian. If there is a medical reason that you need a dietitian, find out how strict your diet will need to be.
-
Step 4
Create realistic goals with the dietitian if you are trying to control obesity. You are less likely to become discouraged that way.
-
Step 5
Follow the advice given to you by the dietitian. They are looking out for your health.
-
Step 6
Check in with the dietitian as often as needed until you get the hang of your new diet. Ask questions when you have them. That is what they are there for.
