How to Use Dictation Software
The latest technology allows you to speak and the computer types. However, it's not perfect and you'll likely have to review dictated documents and changing words and phrases which aren't even close to what was dictated. There are ways to keep this aggravating process to a minimum.

1
Make sure the dictation software you choose is compatible with your word processing program. There are subtle differences in the commands unique to every word processing program, which the software needs to know to operate efficiently.
-
2
Take your time "training" the software to adapt to your voice and accent. Make corrections to what is "written" on the screen during the training process. Training is essential, even if the manufacturer of the dictation software insists that it isn't necessary.
-
-
3
Speak using a normal cadence or the cadence you used when training the software. Slowing down or speeding up your dictation can confuse the software and you might end up with words you can't identify.
-
4
Use a decent microphone. Some dictation software packages include microphones, and they work fairly well. Otherwise use a microphone that produces a clear transmission of your voice to the computer with minimal interference.
-
5
Beware of feedback from audio devices, including computer speakers. This can happen when using the microphone too close to the devices or if the volume is turned up too high.
-
6
Reduce or eliminate any background noise that may confuse the software, including music (especially with lyrics), other people talking within range of the microphone or other distractions.
