When remodeling a bathroom, a new shower can make the biggest difference but can also be the biggest job to take on. Replacing a fiberglass shower unit means there is less mess and work than when working with tile and grout. Learn how to replace a fiberglass shower unit by following these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Shut off the water supply to the bathroom before loosening any water connections. Do not pull on the unit body until the water is turned off.
Step2
Disconnect the water supply lines and the drain from the unit. Take the faucet off if it is connected through the back of the unit.
Step3
Drill or cut out the plastic rivets holding the old unit in place. Use a utility knife to cut along the edges of the unit to break the seal of caulk. Pull the unit from the wall carefully.
Step4
Assemble the drain into the new unit. Screw it loosely into place. Set the new unit into place using a level to help place it correctly. Wooden shims can be used to help keep the unit in position.
Step5
Secure the fiberglass shower unit to the wall using screws and hardware for the particular unit you have.
Step6
Connect the water supply lines to the water connections. Install the P-trap under the unit by checking for fitment. After proper fitment is found, install the P-trap and other fittings using cement glue. Finish installing the drain at this time also.
Step7
Apply caulk around the edges of the unit to make sure water doesn't get behind it. Allow 24 hours for the caulk to dry before getting wet.
