Step 1
Pack oversize objects in sturdy, clean boxes. Don't reuse an old box that has holes or tattered edges. The better quality the box, the simpler it is to ship.
-
Step 2
Clearly label the address on multiple sides of the box, and indicate any specifications necessary for the contents.
-
Step 3
Measure the weight of the package if possible. One way to measure a package that is light enough for you to hold is to stand on a scale holding the package and then subtract your own weight.
-
Step 4
Measure the dimensions (length, width and height) of the package, which are also important in determining if the package is oversize. Dimensional weight is the three dimensions multiplied together and divided by 194. UPS and FedEx both use dimensional weight in determining shipping costs.
-
Step 5
Calculate shipping rates at the websites of USPS, FedEx or UPS. All three carriers have online information about calculating rates if you know the specifications of your package.
-
Step 6
Ship your package easily from home by printing a label and arranging for pickup. Call the carrier ahead of time to ensure that these services are available in your area.
-
Step 7
Transport your package to the carrier office using a handcart if you are unable to arrange for pickup. Most offices will have a cart on hand so that you do not need to furnish your own. If you are at home you may want to arrange to have the specific courier pickup the package.

Step 8
Mail oversize packages well ahead of time to avoid paying premium rates on delivery options. If you mail the package weeks before it needs to be delivered, you can choose the slowest shipping option for a lower rate.
