How to Hunt Caribou

Caribou are one of the oldest game species in the world. They are not as commonly hunted as they used to be because their range is limited to arctic and sub-arctic regions. However, if you are willing to go to them, they are plentiful. Unless you already live in caribou country, you'll need a guide's help to get you close to the herds and track them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Decide what type of hunting you want to do. Hunters go after caribou with rifles, muzzleloaders and bows.
Step2
Find a guide. Because of the climate and terrain you will be traveling in you will need a guide's assistance. Typically guides will fly you from commercial airports to remote areas near caribou herds. Choose a guide that will accommodate your hunting preference. Look at guides that operate in Canada and Alaska and decide which location works better for you.
Step3
Pack your gear. Most guides will send a packing list to explain exactly what you need to bring. If you are crossing into Canada, you need to pre-register your guns with Canadian customs. You will also need warm, camouflaged clothing.
Step4
Meet your guide and embark on a great adventure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk to your guide about pursuing other species while you are in the area. They can make arrangements for hunting grizzlies, black bears, dall sheep, moose, wolves and small game. Some offer fishing, too.
  • Hunting caribou in open terrain requires taking shots from a distance. Practice shots from 35 yards before leaving.
