How to Go From Co-Worker to Supervisor

It can be difficult to assume a position of authority that puts you in charge of people who have been your colleagues. You have to learn to deal with your former coworkers so you retain their respect and cooperation.

Instructions

    • 1

Treat the people the same as you always did. These people were your friends as well as your coworkers. You know how they work better than anyone does. Don't change the way you react to them.

    • 2

Use your relationship to your advantage. Since you know these people so well make sure you use that knowledge to help yourself better supervise them. You don't have to look over their shoulder. You know that they are capable. Give them their assignments and go on to your own.

    • 3

Let them help you. Most of your coworkers will be very happy that you got the position and will be glad to give you their support. If there are things you are unsure of ask them.

    • 4

Try not to step on any toes. Since you have worked closely with these people for years you know where they are sensitive when it comes to work. Try to handle these issues in a way that you know will not offend.

    • 5

Learn from the previous supervisor. Again you have the upper hand. You know the complaints of your former coworkers of their previous supervisor. Use this information and don't make the mistakes the previous supervisor did.

    • 6

Be fair. Let your former coworkers know that you have not changed just because you are now their supervisor. You still want to work the way you always have--you were a great team before--you don't want to change that.

    • 7

Listen to your previous coworkers. In order for you to succeed in your new title you need these people. Talk to them and allow them to give you input about whatever needs to be done. You don't want chaos, but you do want to let them know that the respect you always had for them has not changed.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's a fine balancing act to make this transition and it won't happen overnight. Work on it.

  • Be the professional you are.
