Step 1
Bring your own ball for an edge. If you've been playing for awhile, you probably have a "hardness preference." Some hacky sacks are so full of beans they are almost rigid. Others are very soft and squishy. Most players find it easier to play with a softer ball because it adjusts to the contours of whatever it rests on.
-
Step 2
Wear the right shoes. Since you usually move the hacky sack with your feet, wearing large shoes gives a player a large advantage. Oversized sneakers will make you a hacky sack champ. Some contenders might cry foul, arguing that big shoes are an unfair advantage, but your footwear won't be violating any rules.
-
Step 3
Get your serves down. The serve starts the ball in motion from its initial position at a player's feet. Some players use a two-legged serve, holding the ball between their feet, and then kicking upward. Others put the ball on one foot and heft it up into the air with their toes. Practice your serves at home until you get good at them.

Step 4
Use all your body parts. In hacky sack, you can use any body part to keep the ball moving. Headbutts and "trapping" the ball with joints are very effective.
-
Step 5
Practice, practice, practice. Become adept at keeping the hacky sack in the air by yourself. Time yourself to see how long you can keep the sack aloft, and then try to top that time at each succeeding practice session.
