"Pick Your Own" produce farms provide local fruits and vegetables at bargain prices. Picking fruit for purchase is a summer tradition for many people, especially those who enjoy making their own fruit preserves and fresh fruit pies. Here's how to join the fun and pick your own fruit locally.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a Pick Your Own berry or produce farm. Look online at the Pick Your Own.org website. Since this pick your own list is not exhaustive, check out local farm listings from your state department of agriculture and local department of commerce.

  2. Step 2

Bring your own containers if you like, but the pick your own farm usually has buckets and containers for picked fruit.

  3. Step 3

Dress appropriately for the season and picking conditions. If you're going to pick blackberries, for example, long sleeves and garden gloves will protect you against scratches. Anyone picking strawberries may appreciate knee pads and a sun hat.

  4. Step 4

Follow the rules of the farm. Stick to the current field section and don't harm the plants.

  5. Step 5

Gently pick the fruit and carefully place it in the containers to avoid bruising.
