Hurricanes and other storms can cause flooding. When the rivers overflow they can pollute your local drinking water. Whether your water is county, city or well water, do not take a chance drinking it. Disinfect the water whenever a water emergency arises.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use bottled water if there is any present. This water should not be affected by the flooding and should be safe to drink.

  2. Step 2

Filter water before using any treatment methods if the water is cloudy or murky. Take a clean cloth and pour the water through it. Repeat until the water is clear.

  3. Step 3

Boil water for several minutes to disinfect it. This is the best method to use in an emergency. The water should be safe to drink after boiling it.

  4. Step 4

Treat the water with chlorine if you can not boil it. Chlorine is regular household bleach. This method is less effective but will disinfect the water. Use about 8 drops per gallon of water.

  5. Step 5

Purchase chlorine tablets at drug stores to treat the water if you do not have any bleach. Use 1 tablet for every quart of water to be disinfected.

  6. Step 6

Disinfect emergency water with tincture of iodine. Add 5 drops of iodine to every quart of clear water. You can also use iodine tablets. These can be purchased at local drug stores. Follow the instructions on the packaging for use to disinfect water.

  7. Step 7

Obtain clean water to drink by emptying your hot water tank. Take precaution with this water, but it should not be contaminated. If it looks cloudy or smells, then disinfect it by boiling or using chlorine or iodine.
