Step1
Determine your needs. Some need a full encyclopedia, thesaurus and map software, while others just need an online dictionary. As this type of software can be expensive, make sure you'll be using what you buy.
Step2
Evaluate prices, usefulness and benefits of the software. You can do this on the Internet or at your local software store. Make sure the software is compatible with your computer and that it offers everything you need. Be aware that you'll likely need to buy more than one piece of software.
Step3
Compare what you have decided to purchase with what's already available for free on the Internet. Ask yourself if buying Encarta Encyclopedia is better than using Wikipedia, do you want to use online dictionaries and do you need reference software not easily available online. Doing your research assures that you don't buy anything you don't need.
Step4
Purchase your software either online or at your local software store. The advantage of buying locally is that it is easier to return the software if there is something wrong with it and you get it right away. The disadvantage is that you may not get the variety of choices that you'd get from online sources.
