Most computer users need some form of reference software. This could include dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps or atlas software, translation and thesaurus software. Once you've determined that the free online versions of the software are inadequate for your needs, you can use these steps to find the best reference software elsewhere.

From Quick Guide: Educational Software
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research your needs at Amazon.com's Education and Reference section. There is a wide variety of software to choose from and most have been reviewed by previous customers.

  2. Step 2

Consider going to one of the local computer software superstores or office supply stores, which offer many varieties of reference software, if you aren't interested in looking online. You won't have the benefit of seeing any references or reviews, but you can always ask the employees their thoughts on which software is best and you will even be able to compare prices right at the store.

  3. Step 3

Try buying reference software from eBay, if you're looking for a bargain. Some of it is new, while others are used. You'll get a good price, even on new software, but make sure that it is compatible with your computer and current software. Also check to ensure that it isn't too outdated.

  4. Step 4

Look for reference software that has automatic updates. Some software programs will automatically update the system from the internet, making it a purchase that will last for a long time. Look for this on the package or on the software company's website.
