How to Eat Breadfruit

Breadfruit is a very important food to the South Pacific Islands. In fact, if you are familiar with the story of Captain Bligh and the Mutiny on the Bounty, you will know that breadfruit was the cause of the Mutiny. There are many ways to eat breadfruit; this will give you a few ideas that are popular amongst the cultures of the South Pacific.

        Roast your breadfruit over hot coals. Simply slice into the breadfruit and stuff it with coconut for a decidedly fresh roasted flavor.

        Dry your breadfruit in the sun. Slice your breadfruit into small edible pieces. Then let the breadfruit dry in the sun. Some people additionally bake them at a high temperature for a few minutes after this to remove the residual moisture.

        Try the Malaysian recipe of peeling the breadfruit, slicing it into bite-sized pieces and then frying it in light sugar syrup. Once it is crisp and brown, it is ready to eat.

        Bake your breadfruit in a pan adding just a little water. The inside will become moist and juicy. Depending on the size, if you are using a conventional oven, bake the breadfruit at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.

        Grind your breadfruit into flour. After peeling the breadfruit, allow it to dry and bake in the sun until any moisture has been completely removed. Then in a flour mill, grind it and add it in an even mixture to wheat flour. Then bake the bread from it as you normally would.
