Step 1
Browse online at name brand websites such as tampax.com or obtampons.com, and go to the drug store to find and compare the different types and brands of tampons. Look for brands such as Tampax, o.b. and Playtex, which tend to advertise to a younger audience.
-
Step 2
Choose an applicator vs. no applicator. Often teens with little experience using tampons prefer an applicator to ease insertion, while others prefer the non-applicator type because they are smaller and more environmentally friendly since they have no extra pieces to throw away.
-
Step 3
Pick a cardboard or plastic applicator if you decide on a tampon with applicator. Plastic applicators may be easier to insert and are less likely to bend and break in a purse or backpack. Cardboard applicators are flushable and biodegradable, leaving nothing to throw away. Again, the teen needs to decide a preference since one is no better than the other.
-
Step 4
Decide to purchase scented vs. non-scented tampons. Some girls prefer scented tampons to ensure that odor is kept to a minimum, but most tampons have natural odor protection since they are used internally. If your teen is sensitive, non-scented tampons can cut down on irritation.
-
Step 5
Compare absorbency levels and choose the one or ones best for your teen. Select from light, regular, super and super plus. Most tampon manufacturers offer multipacks with a variation of absorbency levels for the cycle of your teen's period.
-
Step 6
Go to playtexsport.com and tampax.com for free samples of the product, to allow your teen to try before you buy. Go to obtampons.com for a free decorative o.b. tampon carrying case.
