Hair relaxers are lotions or creams similar to solutions used for permanents, but are used to straighten hair. There are a number of hair relaxers on the market, but all of them contain harsh chemicals that can damage your hair and skin. If you know how to use these products safely, you can have beautiful straight hair without damaging your delicate scalp.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Select a hair relaxer that does not contain lye. Lye is found in many relaxer products, but it can easily burn your skin. Lye-free hair relaxers will not bother your skin as much, though you still need to take precautions and use them safely.
Step2
Test the product first, by applying a small amount to a piece of hair at the back of your neck. This will determine if you are allergic to the product, or if it is too strong for your particular hair.
Step3
Protect your delicate skin by applying a light layer of petroleum jelly to the scalp before application to prevent burning.
Step4
Wash out hair relaxers with a neutralizing shampoo. If the product does not come with a small bottle of neutralizing shampoo, you can usually find some where you would normally buy hair care products. Use conditioner frequently after relaxing your hair.
Step5
Consider going to a professional hairdresser. Professionals know how to choose the right products for you and apply them safely. A hairdresser can help to apply the product evenly for a perfect look, as well as rinse the product thoroughly from areas that you cannot see.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow the manufacturer's directions. Never allow the product to set longer than the directions to avoid burning your hair and scalp.
  • Never apply hair relaxers if you have wounds on your scalp, and don't brush your hair or scratch your head before applying the product.
  • Avoid using curling or straightening irons, hair dryers and hair dyes if you have used hair relaxers. All of these things can cause excessive damage to chemically treated hair. If you would like to dye your hair, try natural Henna, which adds color and conditioning to your hair without the harsh chemicals.
  • Use hair relaxers at your own risk. Even if you use these products safely, excessive use can cause stop or slow your hair growth, cause scalp irritation and damage, hair thinning, breakage, and loss.
