Most dating situations bring on stress, no matter who is involved. Dating a person of a different race can bring its own set of stressors. Depending on what part of the country you live in, interracial relationships can be more or less difficult to enjoy. Prepare yourself before you begin dating and you can save some of the stress for later.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Test the waters by going out on your first date to a place where you know everyone. Bring your date where you can trust the people and know what their reaction will be when they see you. Be confident in a respectful reception.
Step2
Find other interracial couples with whom to socialize. You can learn how to deal with racism and your own nervousness from the experience of successful couples. You can find support to help you move out more in the community.
Step3
Talk with each other about your nervousness and try to come up with various scenarios that you might encounter on your date. Decide ahead of time how you will react. Make a commitment to support each other and not let fear dictate your behavior or feelings.
Step4
Set boundaries and mutual agreements. Agree that if either person is uncomfortable in a situation and wants to leave, the other person will follow immediately with no argument. Knowing you've got this support upfront can take away some of the fear of what you might do in a hostile or unfriendly environment.
Step5
Stand tall and know that you are not alone and that you are doing nothing wrong. Having strength in your convictions and a genuine concern for your date's well being can help you to overcome the invariable nervousness associated with interracial dating.
