How to Change Page Margins in Microsoft Word

Page margins are the space between the edge of your page and where your text lies. Different types of documents require different types of page margins. With Microsoft Word, you can specify your page margins for the top, bottom, left and right of your document in just a few simple steps.

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Open Microsoft Word. Open an existing Word file, or start a new, blank document you can use to change the page margins.
Step2
Choose the "File" menu and select "Page Setup" to bring up the "Page Setup" dialog box.
Step3
Type in a value or use the up and down arrows to set the top, bottom, left and right page margins of your document. The default page margins for Microsoft Word is 1 inch top and bottom margins and 1 1/4 inch left and right margins.
Step4
Apply these changes to your whole document or from this point forward by picking a selection in the "Preview" section of the "Page Setup" dialog box.
Step5
Click the "OK" button in the "Page Setup" dialog box to set your margins and close the dialog box.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to set your new page margins as the default page margins that will be applied to every new document, click the "Default…" button in the "Page Setup" dialog box after you have set your new margins.
  • You can also change your page margins by adjusting the gray area (representing your margins) on your rulers while in Print Layout view.
  • You can also change your page orientation in the "Page Setup" dialog box by clicking on either "Portrait" or "Landscape."
