Things You'll Need:

  • Paper, stone, metal or wood Japanese lanterns
  • Lantern-shaped metal votive holders
  1. Step 1

Add Japanese lanterns made of stone or small, metal votive holders shaped like Japanese lanterns to a garden to give it a Japanese look and feel.

  2. Step 2

Decorate indoor rooms or patios with Japanese stone lanterns. The lanterns work well with modern, eclectic and traditional decor.

  3. Step 3

Purchase paper lanterns for use in casual, modern or eclectic room settings. Many styles can be found online. They are inexpensive and available in neutral and bright colors. Some are painted with Japanese imagery like koi, geisha girls and Japanese characters. Personalize a plain paper lantern with Japanese characters or other scenes which may or may not be Asian inspired.

  4. Step 4

Hang a string of little paper Japanese lanterns for indoor or outdoor parties. They add a classy, festive touch and come in a variety of colors. They also can bring a little fun and color into everyday decor. Battery-operated versions are also available.

  5. Step 5

Get some boxy metal or wood lanterns with silk or paper panes. Their clean lines and simplicity blend well with modern decor.

  6. Step 6

Use Japanese lanterns as a starting point for decorating your space in a Japanese style. Add other small, inexpensive items over time. Eventually, you may want to totally completely decorate a room or your complete environment in Japanese style.
