How to Become a Certified Project Manager

Project Managers are needed in just about every industry throughout the world. There are standards that must be met in order to ensure all project managers have a minimum set of skills The Project Management Institute offers a certification for project managers called "PMP" (Professional Management Professional).

  1. Step 1

    Obtain the educational requirements needed to sit for the test. Persons with a high school diploma or associate's degree must have five years of experience in all five performance domains in non-overlapping projects. Persons with a bachelor's degree must have three years of experience in all five performance domains in non-overlapping projects. Performance domains consist of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and closing.

  2. Step 2

    Submit a set of experience verification forms. These forms must be completed for all projects in which the candidate has been involved. Eligible experience will be assessed by PMI.

  3. Step 3

    Meet project management education requirements. All candidates must have at least 35 contact hours of project management education. This is outlined in detail at PMI's website.

  4. Step 4

    Wait for PMI to complete the application audit process. All materials submitted by the candidate will be reviewed to determine if all requirements were met.

  5. Step 5

    Bring a valid form of identification to the test site. Accepted forms include a driver's license, military ID, passport or national ID card. All ID must be up to date and valid. Following these steps to the letter will ensure a smooth certification process.
