How to Grow Fragrant Flowers

There is nothing quite like sitting outside in your own yard enjoying the subtle fragrances of your favorite flowers. Whether it is a warm evening enjoying the lilac blooms or a crisp morning strolling by the hyacinths, a garden of fragrant flowers can lift your spirit. Grow a fragrant flower garden.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Choose the flowers with scents you love. Plant in the spring unless they are bulbs then plant in the fall. Follow care instruction for the flowers.

  2. Step 2

    Sow iris bulbs for a striking burst of color and fragrance. Blooms start showing up in early spring. These are a great flower to start your fragrant garden.

  3. Step 3

    Plant violets, woodruff or lily of the valley in a shaded area. These give the garden soft scents that aren't overpowering to the senses.

  4. Step 4

    Spread roses, lilacs, peonies or lavender to enjoy more powerful scents later in the spring. Give your garden air heady scents that you can enjoy until summer. Some varieties last until fall.

  5. Step 5

    Propagate stock, four o'clocks, nicotiana, or moonflower vine to enjoy light evening scents. An evening dinner in the garden keeps you lingering long after the dessert is finished.

  6. Step 6

    Introduce phlox, tuberose, naked ladies or lycoris squamigera to extend your fragrant flower garden well into fall. Be sure to deadhead to keep the blooms coming.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure and plant in shaded and sunny areas to improve the chances of a flowers blooming all season long.
  • Don't neglect your garden. Weed, water and watch for insects that are harmful to your plants.
