A handmade tying box is a convenient way to carrying around all your fly tying tools. When tying flies you need to have all your supplies at your fingertips. The idea of a tying box is to be able to tie flies anywhere with convenience.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what size fly tying box you want to build. Purchase enough plywood to complete it. It's a good idea to overestimate what you need. You can always save the extra wood for another project.

  2. Step 2

Assemble the plywood in the shape of a square frame with four sides. It will look like a picture box.

  3. Step 3

Use wood bond to secure a flat piece of plywood on both sides of the square frame. Nail the plywood down.

  4. Step 4

Allow the wood bond to dry then saw the box in half so that it makes two perfectly equal halves. When cutting it think about the finished product resembling a briefcase.

  5. Step 5

Secure the frame of the fly tying box by drilling 0.3-inch holes into the joints and screwing them together with wood screws. Place wooden dowels into the holes to bury the screws.

  6. Step 6

Make partitions for the flies by cutting pieces of plywood to size and securing them with wood bond. Customize the partitions to the sizes of your flies.

  7. Step 7

Paint your handmade fly tying box then attach hinges, handles, stay and lock. Secure a carrying handle with nuts and bolts.
