Here are some things to look for when you buy BNC adapters.

1. Learn the difference between the male and female BNC connectors. The difference between the male and female ends of BNC connectors is not as straight forward as other connectors and it is essential to know the difference when buying adapters. The male end is the larger end and has a coaxial pin in the middle. The female BNC connector has a hole in the center for the coaxial pin. The male BNC connector has the locking mechanism that connects to the female end.

5. Make sure you are getting a BNC adapter that is the right ohm rating for what you need. BNC connectors come in 50- and 75-ohm versions. It should say on the connector which ohm version it is. You can also check for dielectric material around the inside of the male end of the connector, which often designates a 50-ohm connector, whereas a lack of dielectric material signifies a 75-ohm connector.

• Be careful not to get a TNC adapter instead of a BNC. A TNC adapter is essentially the same as a BNC except it is threaded which will make it incompatible with many connectors.
