Home automation devices can make it possible for the elderly to maintain their independence and avoid assisted living facilities or retirement homes. These items can range from automated pill dispensers to alarm systems, all designed to work at the press of a button.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Check out options available under the classification of Embedded Health Systems and Private Health Networks. The first collects data that can be used to diagnose diseases and risk patterns and is embedded in appliances, furniture and clothing; the latter uses wireless technology to connect portable devices and store data in a database.
Step2
Decide how you want to use the technology. Options include everything from wireless links to 911 emergency services to voice reminders for appointments or to take medication. There are also pill dispensers that administer correct dosages of medication and notify doctors and caregivers when a dosage is missed.
Step3
Research the companies that manufacture these devices. A few links to some of the better-known companies are listed below.
Step4
Discuss your options with doctors, caregivers and friends that are using automated systems to discover what works well and what doesn't.
Step5
Check with your local medical supply store, and discuss the options available to you and how they work.
