When you realize that you and your neighbors don't have a fire hydrant nearby, you might want to go about having one installed. There are several ways to do this. You can pay to have it installed yourself, convince a neighbor to do it instead, or ask your city to install a fire hydrant.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Ask the water department whether there is a water line in your front yard. From there, figure out where the closest place a hydrant could be installed. If you don't have a water line on your property, you will have to convince one of your neighbors to put it on their property.
Step2
Find out the size of the water line in your front yard. Only water lines that are at least six inches in diameter can have fire hydrants installed on them.
Step3
Work with the city to pay to have a fire hydrant installed in your yard. In many cities, you can ask to have a fire hydrant installed if you pay for it at cost. This typically runs anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000.
Step4
Create a map that illustrates where the nearest fire hydrants are in your neighborhood and throughout your city. If you can show the city that your neighborhood has fewer fire hydrants than most, you have a better chance of achieving positive results.
Step5
Get the fire department's support on the project if you can. Schedule an appointment to meet with your local fire chief and talk with him about your concerns for fire safety in your neighborhood.
Step6
Meet with the water department, city council or whichever department is in charge of installing fire departments in your city. Show all the evidence you have that the city should pay for installing a fire hydrant in your neighborhood.
