Sweet and creamy with a kick, a Velvet Hammer is a rich after-dinner drink. There are many different recipes for a Velvet Hammer; they use a variety of spirits and liqueurs. The one thing in common is that Velvet Hammer is served cold and uses some form of cream. There are even non-alcoholic Velvet Hammers. To make a Velvet Hammer, follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mix a popular Velvet Hammer recipe. Put one part crème de cacao, one part coffee liqueur, two parts vodka and four parts cream into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake thoroughly. Pour into a stemmed cocktail glass and serve.

  2. Step 2

Try a variation. Take equal parts of orange liqueur, coffee liqueur and half and half cream and pour into a shake. Shake thoroughly and pour into a cocktail glass filled with ice cubes. Serve.

  3. Step 3

Use ice cream instead of cream. In a blender, mix a scoop of coffee ice cream, 1 ounce of crème de cacao and 2 oz. of brandy. Blend until smooth. Pour into a cocktail glass and serve.

  4. Step 4

Experiment with other combinations. Use a variety of liqueurs, such as coffee, orange and banana. Try different spirits, such as vodka, brandy, bourbon or rum. For the cream base, try heavy cream or half and half. Ice cream is also an alternative; use vanilla, coffee or other flavored ice creams.

  5. Step 5

Make a non-alcoholic version. Use a scoop of coffee ice cream; add chocolate syrup and coffee beans. Blend in a blender and pour into a stemmed glass. Serve cold.

Tips & Warnings
  • A stemmed glass, like a cocktail, will keep the Velvet Hammer cool. Hold a stemmed glass by the stem, not the bowl of the glass.
  • Add garnishes to the Velvet Hammer to enhance the presentation. Chocolate shavings, mint sprigs or an orange wedge add color and interest.
  • Always drink alcoholic beverages responsibly. Follow all federal, state and local laws when consuming alcohol.
  • Never drink and drive.
