Writing a geography test should include a mix of different types of questions to accommodate various learning styles. The directions given here are for a ninth grade European geography test. However, it can be modified for most other grade levels.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Before Writing the Test

Step1
Review the textbook and the class notes you gave students during the unit. Also look over any study guides and old quizzes.
Step2
Decide which objectives you want to cover in the test. What do you want the students to learn from this geography unit?
Step3
Determine which objectives you will use for the long essay and the shorter essay questions. If you have questions listed on the study guide, they are good place to get test questions.
Step4
Make a list of geography vocabulary terms you want to include on the test.
Step5
Decide what type of map, a political, physical or both that you want to add to the test.

Writing the Test

Step1
Write 10 fill-in-the blank statements with answers from the vocabulary list. For example, "The Netherlands reclaimed land from the sea by using a ______?" (Polder) These are worth 2 points each.
Step2
Prepare a student answer sheet with a list of 10 locations or physical features. Next, prepare a map with each location or physical feature labeled with a letter (A-J). During the test, students should match each letter with the correct location or feature. These are worth 1 point each.
Step3
Write 10 multiple-choice questions. For example, "Spain uses this type of farming method to produce crops in the Meseta." (Dry-Land Farming). These are worth 2 points each.
Step4
Write two short answer questions. The students should be able to answer each question in a brief paragraph. For example, "How did technological advances help The Netherlands to develop as a country?" These are worth 10 points each.
Step5
Write a brief statement or questions about a major topic from the geography unit. You may want to combine several areas that the class studied. For example, "Describe the various economic activities of France, Germany, Austria and Benelux. How does geography affect these activities?" Ask students to explain their answer in a five paragraph essay worth 30 points.
Step6
Add any bonus questions you think it appropriate. For example, as students to write a brief paragraph about any information they feel is important, but wasn't on the test. This can be worth as many points as you deem fit.
