Allow yourself time to adjust. Work on accepting this huge change in your family life, but know that it may take some time.
-
2
Keep an open mind. You may not particularly like your new step mom, but if you make an effort to get to know her, you may find that you have things in common and can actually become friends.

-
3
Be respectful even when you don't agree with everything your new step parent does or says.
-
4
Express your feelings in a polite and direct manner. If you're having a hard time accepting this change, talk to your parent about it. If you feel comfortable, talk to your step parent as well. They are probably feeling some of the same insecurities as you, and by talking about it, the three of you may be able to work things out and become closer in the process.

Lean on your friends and siblings for support. Seek the help of a counselor if you're having an especially difficult time coping with this new addition to your family.

Tips & Warnings
If your step parent isn't nice or accepting of you or your siblings, talk directly with your parent and step parent to let them know how your step parent's behavior is affecting you and the family. Dealing with these issues early on can prevent years of family conflict.
Accepting this person into your mom's or dad's life will help you to keep a good relationship with your parent. If your step-dad makes your mom happy, even if you don't understand how that could be possible, be friendly and polite for the sake of your relationship with your parent.
Don't think of your step parent as a replacement for your other parent but rather as a new person in your life who you can hopefully share a strong relationship with in the future.
