Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the bowels that causes ulcers and inflammation in the large intestine and rectum. The ulcers can bleed, causing diarrhea that contains pus and mucus. Traditional treatment of colitis includes expensive chemical medications and sometimes surgery. If you suffer from colitis or have risk factors for developing colitis, you can reduce and prevent the symptoms safely and effectively at home through natural medicine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eat a healthy low fat diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. The most important part of any natural medicine treatment is a healthy diet that provides the body with all of the vitamins and minerals needed to maintain balance, while eliminating harmful chemicals, toxins and fats that can cause colitis and other health problems. Particularly important in the treatment and prevention of colitis is a diet that includes plenty of fluids, fruits, magnesium and Vitamin C.

  2. Step 2

Increase exercise to maintain homeostasis and help the body to eliminate cholesterol, fats and toxins. Stress can be a trigger to colitis, so exercise that helps reduce stress can be helpful, such as Tai Chi, yoga or Pilates.

  3. Step 3

Replace possible triggers to colitis with healthy alternatives. Things such as dairy products, chocolate, beans, spicy foods, artificial sweeteners, fats and alcohol can worsen colitis symptoms. Instead, drink green tea, sweeten foods with natural honey and eat lots of fruits and vegetables.

  4. Step 4

Take Omega 3 supplements or increase your intake of foods that are naturally high in Omega acids. Omega acids are an effective medicine for many ailments and can reduce and prevent the recurrence of ulcerative colitis. Food naturally high in Omega acids include flaxseed, seafood, fish and nuts.

  5. Step 5

Supplement your regular diet with probiotics, available in pills or probiotic fortified foods. Probiotics can rid your intestinal tract of harmful bacteria replacing them with helpful healthy bacteria that can help you digest food, which prevents and reduces the symptoms of colitis.
