How to Install a Biometric Scanner
Biometric scanners are rapidly replacing swipe cards and access codes at buildings that require a level of security beyond the traditional guard in the lobby. As the prices decrease, this trend will increase. Biometric systems can be used to recognize many biological functions from iris recognition to face recognition and fingerprint identification. Biometric scanners also can be used to replace time cards to keep track of employees' comings and goings.

1
Decide which kind of biometric system you will need. Weigh the options of the various devices and the level of security you require. Fingerprints and iris recognition systems are more reliable than whole facial identification systems.
-
2
Build your database. You will need to enter all the information from the people whom you will allow to use the biometric system for entry to your facility. New employees, vendors and regular visitors must enter their fingerprints or iris print in your database in order to be recognized by the system.

3
Prioritize the various levels of security in your building. Perhaps a facial recognition program may be enough to let someone into the building when the system is monitored on the desktop of an appropriate employee. Other areas of your business may be more sensitive and you will want to install iris or fingerprint recognition door interface boards at the entrances to higher-level security offices.
-
4
Educate employees and others who will be using the scanners of your motivation for installing the biometric scanners. You can reduce the possibility of civil rights suits if everyone involved in your security is on board with your decisions and your reasoning for updating your security systems.
