Sport sambo is the formal, competitive version of the Russian-born sambo fighting system. Sport sambo preceded most other versions of the martial art and is today considered to be one of the four main forms of competitive amateur wrestling. Using sport sambo techniques benefit your level of physical fitness and provide a devastating twist to any other martial art you might practice. Follow these steps to use sport sambo techniques.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn some sambo throws. Throwing an opponent is one of the most pivotal moves in sport sambo. In fact, throwing an opponent on his back while you remains standing results in a "Total Victory" win. Sambo throws, like the simple Podsad or the more complex Bodok, are very effective takes on traditional martial arts throws. Learn some sambo throws to use the technique.

  2. Step 2

Transition to a takedown. Takedowns are another key to sambo technique. Instead of simply throwing your opponent, a well executed takedown allows you to get your opponent from a defensive position into an arm lock, leg lock or other offensive move. In addition to being extremely effective, sambo takedowns earn big points in the sambo ring.

  3. Step 3

Fight on the ground. To use the complete range of sambo techniques you need to be able to fight on the ground. Transitioning from defensive to offensive ground positions and securing offensive moves such as the Gregg lock, a debilitating knee lock, or the Golovagrud, a way to break an opponent's grip and land him in an arm lock, are essential parts of sport sambo technique.

  4. Step 4

Find your stance. Learning the sambo stance, which guards against attack while keeping you in a position to launch against your opponent, is one of the other pillars of sambo technique. The sambo stance keeps your balance firm, your body protected and your hands and legs ready to shoot for a throw or takedown. So, get your stance in order to effectively apply the other elements of sambo technique.
