College is expensive and even though it's an investment in your future, unless you've saved up for college, it's hard to find the money for a higher education. One way students help pay for college and college related expenses is by getting work study positions on their college campuses. Often, these positions are limited, but you can find them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Talk to the office of financial aid at your college or university. First, you will want to make sure that you do qualify for work study as part of your financial aid package. Your financial aid officer will be able to help you figure out if this is the case. If you do qualify for work study positions, make sure that your financial aid officer knows that you are interested in work study so they can give you work study funds as part of your aid package.
Step2
Visit the office of career services at your college or university. Your career services office will have listings of available work study positions for you to browse. They will also be able to give you information on applying for positions and any necessary prerequisites.
Step3
Look for postings of open positions on campus. You may see fliers posted around campus advertising open work study jobs. You may want to look near the library, near the dining hall, in academic buildings and in other student common areas for these postings.
Step4
Ask your academic advisor for information on work study positions. Often, there may be work study positions, such as teaching assistants or research assistants, in the department of your major. Your academic advisor may be able to point you in the direction of professors in your department that are hiring, or he may even be able to give you a work study position!
Step5
Let your friends know that you are looking for a work study position. If you have friends who are already doing work study, they may know of open positions at their places of employment before these jobs are even posted to the rest of campus.
Step6
Apply for the position or positions that you are interested in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk to your financial aid officer as soon as possible about work study positions. It is best to do this before the semester starts or at the very beginning of the semester.
  • Places that often hire students on work study assignments include the library, the dining hall, academic and college offices and campus security.
