  • Wood plaque
  • Fine sand paper
  • Tinted primer
  • Paint

Pick a phrase or message that you would like displayed. Use a favorite quote, family member name or a clever saying.
Step2
Order vinyl lettering. Find vinyl lettering retailers online. Pick a company that specializes in crafts and not business needs.
Step3
Sand the board that the sign will be applied to. Wipe the board with a damp cloth to remove sawdust.
Step4
Prime the board. Apply the base color using as many coats of paint as necessary for full coverage of the board.
Step5
Let the board dry completely. Use light sandpaper to distress the corners and edges of the sign. Wipe any dust off the board.
Step6
Place the vinyl lettering on a flat surface. Lay the letters so that the side that is applied to the wood is facing up. Rub the paper firmly with the edge of a ruler.
Step7
Peel the backing off the lettering. Center the letters on the board. Use the ruler to rub the letters off the paper and onto the board. Carefully pull the paper off the letters once they are all adhered to the board.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rub each letter off individually. Gradually pull the paper up after each letter is applied.
  • Apply wood stain to the edges and corners for a more rustic look.
