You can simplify your lawn maintenance duties by using a timer to water your lawn. You can water your lawn while you sleep. Timers can actually save water because they are preset to turn off. How many times have you left your sprinkler running only to wake up to a huge watery muddy mess? Here's how to use a timer to water your lawn.

From Quick Guide: Maintaining Your Lawn
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Attach the timer to the outdoor lawn water spigot. Since timers differ, be sure to follow the installation instructions that come with it.

  2. Step 2

Attach the lawn hose to the timer.

  3. Step 3

Program the timer in accordance to the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Step 4

Turn on your water spigot. In order for the timer to work, the spigot has to be in the "On" position.

  5. Step 5

    Turn on your timer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some timers allow you to set more than one watering cycle per day.
  • Some timers have water pressure requirements. Be sure to check your water pressure to ensure it is at appropriate level for the timer's requirements.
  • Some lawn timers are electric. If you live in an area that has frequent power outages, your best option is to use a battery powered timer.
  • Be mindful of water restrictions. If your town imposes water restrictions due to low water levels, be sure reset the watering cycles on your timer to comply with local ordinances.
  • Remove the timer from the spigot during freezing weather.
  • If you are away from home for an extended period of time, be sure to check the batteries in the timer before you leave. You don't want to come home to a brown, burnt lawn because the batteries in the timer died
