Spending 40 or more hours a week at work can definitely be trying. Add to that a whiny coworker that you must deal with on a day to day basis and it can make for a very frustrating situation. There are some things you can do that may quiet the annoying coworker.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Distance yourself from the whiny coworker if it is at all possible. One of the most effective ways to avoid conflict can be to physically remove yourself from the point of conflict.
Step2
Ask the whiny coworker politely to stop contributing to a negative work environment. Often, many people when confronted with their unpleasant behavior correct it out a sense of being ashamed.
Step3
Take the matter to a supervisor if the negative coworker's behavior continues. Conflict resolution is a large part of a supervisor's job description and you shouldn't be afraid to follow proper business channels.
Step4
Write an official letter of complaint to the appropriate work authority if you find the whiny behavior doesn't terminate. Management will normally respond to this sort of complaint quickly as they understand the negative impact conflict has on productivity.
Step5
Confront the coworker directly if the behavior continues. You should not be unwilling to say something unpleasant if the situation has already become too much to bear.
Step6
Consider asking other coworkers if they would consider staging an intervention with the whiny coworker. Peer pressure can sometimes work in the case of conflict when nothing else will.
