Cloth diapers can become an expensive shopping habit because of all the new styles and patterns of cloth diapers available. Used almost universally before the invention of disposable diapers, cloth diapers are making a comeback among health conscious, frugal and earth-friendly families. To save money and for fun, many choose to make their own cloth diapers. Here's how to make pocket cloth diapers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a pocket cloth diapers pattern online. Cloth diaper patterns are available for purchase on many web sites and auction-style listings. Find cloth diaper patterns at the Diaper Shop online.

  2. Step 2

Join an online cloth diapers forum, such as Diaper Swappers, to share ideas and glean information on cloth diaper making. Ask those who sew their own cloth diapers what patterns they recommend.

  3. Step 3

Choose fabrics for your cloth diapers. Specific types of fabrics work best; consult your pattern. You will need absorbent material for diaper inserts. Purchase micro fleece or another non-absorbent fabric to wick moisture away from baby's skin for the inside of your pocket cloth diapers. You will also need waterproof PUL fabric for the exterior layer.

  4. Step 4

Cut the fabric according to your cloth diaper pattern, making necessary adjustments for your chosen size.

  5. Step 5

Sew the pocket cloth diapers as directed, adding elastic at legs and waist as indicated. For side closures, use snaps, which are the closure of choice for most pocket cloth diapers.

  6. Step 6

Buy or make absorbent diaper inserts to go inside your pocket cloth diapers. Chinese pre-folds work wonderfully.

  7. Step 7

Wash pocket cloth diapers and inserts in warm water and dry before use.
