How to Attract Blue Jays to a Garden

Add interest to your garden by attracting wildlife. Birds can bring peace and tranquility and dynamic life to your garden. Provide the basic necessities for any bird, and it will make your garden home. Follow the tips below for attracting blue jays to your garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Have the right foods that blue jays love. Place the food that blue jays love on a flat feeder or surface. They love acorns, raw peanuts, cherries and dogwood.

    • 2

Attract insects by planting a lot of varied plants. All plants bring some sort of insects. Although blue jays eat a mostly vegetarian diet, they like to include an insect once in awhile for protein. Everything from grasses to flowers to vines will attract a variety of insects.

    • 3

Have a source of water for the birds. Adding a water source to your garden is another way to bring peace, tranquility and life to it. Water can bring different kinds of wildlife depending on the source. Install a pond in a large garden. If space is limited, install a small fountain. Even a simple bird bath can do the trick.

    • 4

Plant sunflowers in the garden. Blue jays love sunflowers because of their tasty seeds and to use for nesting.

    • 5

Place the garden next to an oak tree. Blue jays love oak trees. They rely on them for food from nuts and insects, but they also nest in them.

    • 6

Supply a nesting place for blue jays. All birds need a suitable place to nest that offers them enough room and safety from predators. Since blue jays are large, they prefer open platform and shelves. Provide some in high places as well as twigs and grass for them to build a nest with. They can then stay in your garden all winter.
