2. Download or buy anti-virus software. If you are going to use the Internet it is imperative to have an anti-virus program--there are too many sites where you can pick up a virus that will destroy everything on your computer.
3. Purchase or download a package that includes a spreadsheet and word processing program. There are other software programs besides Microsoft that will give you these features. Star Office is one software program which is inexpensive and is perfectly compatible with Microsoft office.
4. Find a software program that you can use to create CDs and DVDs. This is important so you can backup your software programs and not have to go through the hassle of downloading or buying the programs again.
5. Obtain licenses for all your software. Make sure you keep this information in a safe place because without them you will have to repurchase your software again. With them it is a simple matter of downloading or reinstalling the items again and entering the license number you were given before.
6. Add any other software that you will need to run your computer. Although the items in Steps 1 to 4 are the most common software items that you will use, there are some software packages that you will want to obtain for running your own computer.
7. Run your software. The whole idea of using software is to utilize it to the best advantage.
