To maximize the storage area in your home, you can build a simple version of a fixed shelving unit. With a few simple tools and a short period of time, a do-it-yourselfer can tackle this job with very little trouble. Read on to learn how to build a fixed shelving unit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the height and width of the fixed shelving unit you want to build. Take your end pieces and cut 45-degree angles on each end. The easiest way to do this is to use a framing square or a measuring square. Repeat this process on the top and bottom piece. This gives you a picture frame miter on all four corners.

  2. Step 2

Lay your two vertical outside pieces side by side. Measure the distance between each shelf. Shelves are normally between 12 and 16 inches apart.

  3. Step 3

Use your skill saw or table saw to cut your dado joints in your end pieces 1/3 of the way in your void. They are normally 3/4 of an inch wide.

  4. Step 4

Apply wood glue on your end, top and bottom miter joints. Nail with four-penny finish nails. This gives you your outer frame when you build a fixed shelving unit. Measure your shelf length that you will add in your dado opening. Cut shelves 1/16 inch short of measurement. Glue and attach with four-penny finish nails.

  5. Step 5

Lay your fixed shelf unit on its face. Measure the length and width. Cut a 1/4 inch piece of plywood to fit. Use a framing square to square the unit up. Lay 1/4 inch plywood on back and nail in place. Space your nails about every 4 to 6 inches apart.
