Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Understand that genuine Navajo rugs are made by hand, and the rugs are typically made from wool. Dealers say that rugs with cotton wefts have been made for tourists. In weaving, wefts are threads that run horizontally through a piece.
Step2
Make sure you're getting a genuine Navajo rug. One way to do this is to consider visiting the Two Grey Hills Trading Post in Tohatchi, New Mexico. The trading post was established in 1897. It's known to be one of the few remaining historic posts on the Navajo Indian Reservation, and it's said to be a primary source of authentic rugs of the region.
Step3
Know the artist's tribal affiliation before buying a rug. For example, the Indian Arts and Crafts Association recommends knowing whether a piece is made by someone who is a member or certified Indian artisan of the Navajo Nation.
Step4
Notice how the rug is made. In Navajo rugs, the thread running lengthwise is continuous. In weaving, it's called the warp thread.
Step5
Consider that prices for Navajo rugs have increased in recent years, partly because there are fewer skilled weavers, and few young Navajos are learning the skill. Older Navajo rugs are sought after; however, today's weavers are still creating outstanding, top-quality pieces.
Step6
Remember that small rugs can cost as much as $100. Generally, you should be suspicious of a rug's origin if you're offered a large Navajo rug at a low price.
