How to Buy Winter Clothes for a Toddler
It's expensive to buy a whole new wardrobe for kids two or more times a year, but that's exactly what many parents find themselves doing when the weather changes and they realize that none of last year's clothes still fit. This is especially true for parents of toddlers, who may double in size from one year to the next. Follow these steps to buying winter clothes for your toddler.

1
Look for resales in your area. These are often run seasonally as fundraisers by schools that charge a small admission, but they usually have loads of gently used kids clothes on sale for just change per item. If you're lucky enough to find out about it ahead of time, you can register to sell some of your child's outgrown things as well.

2
Stock up on inexpensive jeans, sweats, long-sleeve tops, winter pajamas and socks before it gets too cold so that you aren't rushing and you have time to find the best deals. Many of the big retail stores sell these items for less than $10 (sometimes much less). Remember, you are looking for quantity, not quality, here-these are everyday play clothes that your child will probably only wear for a few months.

Buy two nicer, complete outfits for special occasions, and invest in one good-quality winter coat. Look for a coat that's a little big that will be comfortable over thick sweaters (and may fit next year, too). Don't buy it too big, though, or you will be wrestling to fit it into the car seat all winter.

4
Get undershirts that are a size too big. Your child can wear them for two years if you shop carefully, and they're great makeshift pajamas when paired with a comfy pair of knit or boxer ("just like daddy") shorts in summer. Make sure your child has at least five or six undershirts.

5
Purchase optional outerwear depending on your climate. Snowpants can be bought big and rolled up; mittens and hats should fit now. Like the winter coat, you'll be seeing a lot of these pieces for the next few months, so get something nice that you won't be too sick of come February.
