Establishing a Christmas tradition is a way to celebrate the holiday season and create special memories within your family that will last a lifetime. Each family is unique, so follow these steps to select the right tradition for your family.

From Quick Guide: Family Traditions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold a Christmas cookie exchange for your extended family members every year. Instruct each invited guest to bring several dozen cookies, some of which are for eating, and others are for exchanging, and a container to bring home others' cookies.

  2. Step 2

Take a trip to a favorite store and purchase an ornament for each child in the family every year. When the children leave home, they'll have a box full of ornaments from their childhood with which to decorate their own Christmas trees.

  3. Step 3

String together cranberries and popcorn to decorate the tree several days before Christmas. Play the same Christmas music each year while you gather for this fun family tradition.

  4. Step 4

Contact a church, community center or non-profit organization in your city and ask for the name of a family in need. Gather food items and presents for this family, and then deliver the basket with your own family several days before Christmas.

  5. Step 5

Walk around your neighborhood with your family at night and gaze at the Christmas lights. Consider singing Christmas carols while you stroll.

  6. Step 6

Go ice skating or sledding each year, if you live in a cold climate. Stop for hot chocolate on the way home.

  7. Step 7

Watch the same classic holiday movie, such as "It's a Wonderful Life" or "The Christmas Story" each year. Build a fire and enjoy a warm beverage to make the tradition more cozy.

  8. Step 8

Decorate the house as a family. Wear the same outrageous Christmas sweater or funny reindeer ears each year on the day you decorate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Families today are busier than ever before, so make sure to notify all family members of the day you plan on participating in the tradition well ahead of time, so each person can clear his or her calendar.
