Fur farms have animals whose pelts are profitable, such as mink, marten, fisher, fox, nutria and chinchilla. There is legislation protecting these animals from cruelty, but as with all regulatory legislation, it is only as good as the people enforcing it. There is a licensing system in place for farmers that in theory will ensure animal health standards and requires record keeping that must be available to authorities. Here are a few steps to start your own fur farm.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Animals
  • Land
  • Heated barn
  • Safe cages
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of fur you want to sell. Remember that animals are not free and require a large financial investment for profits to be realized.

  2. Step 2

Find where you can apply for your animal license. Your State's web page will have information as to how and where you apply. There is also a fee that coincides with licensure--this fee is annual.

  3. Step 3

Determine just how involved you want to be in your fur farm. If you have another job, remember that animals require a great deal of care.

  4. Step 4

Write a business plan and find out just how you are set financially. This is a costly venture. Do not spend every penny you have on start up costs--there will always be hidden expenses down the road.

  5. Step 5

Expel the idea that a fur farm is a hobby. Rather, it is a commitment. A fur farm is a full-time business—there are no vacations or days off.

  6. Step 6

Discover if you have a fear of little creatures. If you do then a fur farm is not for you. You will have to feed and handle these animals daily--you won't be able to if you are afraid.

  7. Step 7

Investigate the economy of the area where you want to start your fur farm. A farm is expensive. See if you can find a cheaper part of the country to farm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have enough money to start and continue your business.
  • Buy and raise healthy animals or you will not make any money in resale.
