How to Pitch With Accuracy

Many young pitchers overthrow the baseball instead of learning to pitch with control. Such players usually end up ruining their arms or never reaching their full potential as a player. Fortunately, pitching control can greatly improve with the right guidance. What follows are some simple ways to improve your pitching accuracy.

1. Learn from the greats. Pitchers such as Greg Maddux, John Lieber, David Wells and Brad Radke continue to baffle hitters with their pitching precision. Check your local (cable or satellite) network for baseball games involving any of these pitchers and study their every move.

2. Concentrate on your target. Becoming a control artist takes concentration. Focus (keeping your eyes) on the catcher's mitt and blocking out all other distractions throughout your delivery.

3. Slow things down. Most control problems are caused by a rushed delivery. Remind yourself to stay relaxed keeping a nice even tempo when pitching.

4. Throw with maximum effort. Sometimes a pitcher will try to aim the ball and slow his motion down too much. This usually results in flat pitches over the heart of the plate. Remain consistent by committing yourself totally to each pitch.

5. Visualize strikes. Between innings (or in your bedroom at night) imagine yourself hitting your spots effortlessly. This will reinforce your mental concentration leading to improved confidence and better control.

6. Perfect your pitching mechanics. Good pitching form will put you in the proper position to get the most out of your body. The more efficient your delivery, the more accuracy you will have on every pitch. Consult with a baseball coach that you trust who can observe your delivery and offer suggestions.
