Watching television isn't what it used to be. Many changes have come along in the past several years that have put a few wrinkles into how people watch television. Here are some tips on how to use those changes to your benefit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Do your homework. Unless you have tons of time to spend actually watching every new show that comes along, spend a few minutes reading what the critics have to say. Newspapers carry columns by TV critics who offer suggestions for what shows to spend time on.
Step2
Experiment a little. If you find yourself watching the same old programming every week, set aside some time for at least one program that you've never seen before. You might be surprised by what you find.
Step3
Use a DVR or TiVo. Time management took a huge step forward with the DVR. Just set it up to record when you're not around to watch a favorite program and then play it back at your leisure.
Step4
Throw a TV watching party. If you find that there's a show that many of your friends enjoy as well, arrange a watching party at your house. Some shows have a "cult" following, and it's easy to find kindred spirits to watch with. You'll find it's more fun than watching alone.
Step5
Play catch up. Don't give up on a program just because you missed the first season or two. If you find that you really like a show, rent or buy the back seasons to play catch up. You may find that you can't stop watching the past shows until you've gotten caught up.
