If you are going to cut and style a hairpiece, it is only slightly different then cutting natural hair. The most important thing to remember is that there should not be any distinct lines showing where the hair of the hairpiece begins. Using a feathering technique will make the hairpiece look natural. Read on to learn how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thinning shears
  1. Step 1

Cut the hairpiece while its owner is wearing it.

  2. Step 2

Thin the hairpiece one inch from the material base, being careful to thin only approximately ten percent of the hair. Make sure to use a pair of thinning shears when doing this.

  3. Step 3

Move slightly further from the material base and repeat the thinning process, thinning about another ten percent.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the process after moving about ½ to 1 inch further away from the material base.

  5. Step 5

Feather in the entire length of the hairpiece using this method.

  6. Step 6

Finish cutting the hairpiece by cutting the back and top just as if it was natural hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only use the type of thinning shears that have teeth like a comb.
  • Using this technique of gradual blending will make the hairpiece look like natural hair.
  • It is better to cut a hairpiece in two stages. The first time you cut it leave it slightly longer then to want it to be. Give the hairpiece time to relax and settle down before you re-cut it. The second time cut the hairpiece to the desired length.
  • Be very careful because the hair of a hairpiece will not grow back. The old saying that the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is two weeks does not apply to wigs.
