Choose your environment. Whether it's a specially designed garden window, an indoor hydroponic system, or a fully climate-controlled greenhouse, you'll need to select the growing environment that's right for you.

      • 2

Decide on the types of plants you want to grow. This will determine your heating and cooling requirements. Most garden vegetables need a minimal nighttime temperature of 55 degrees F to continue to grow and produce year round.

Establish growing conditions. Make plans now to provide heating and cooling for optimal plant growth year round. You'll need a thermostat to maintain moderate temperatures day and night. Ventilation and shading may be sufficient for cooling on sunny days, or a fan may be required for air flow.

Buy seed for indoor growth. Many seed companies sell seed specifically hybridized to thrive in a greenhouse environment. This is not essential, but may be helpful.

Plant according to desired harvest time. For a continuous harvest you'll want to sow the seed at regular intervals. For a winter crop of tomatoes, start seeds in June or early July and transplant in September.

      • 6

Give proper care. Make sure your plants have good drainage and are turned occasionally for even exposure to sunlight.

Pollinate. You don't have wind or insects to help you, so pollination is up to you. Gently brush the inside of each flower with a small paint brush. Repeat this process a few times while the plant is flowering. For tomatoes, wait until flower petals are curved back. Then tap the stake that each plant is tied to once each morning and night for 3 days.

Enjoy your harvest. Just the thought of fresh produce through the cold winter months is enough incentive to give year-round growing a try.
