How to Groom a Shiba Inu
Shiba Inus are small, sturdy, compact dogs. Their coat is a thick, wool, double coat that is generally red, black or a combination of the two colors. Shiba Inus have a mind of their own, yet are also friendly and affectionate. They need a full grooming every 6 to 10 weeks and a general grooming once a week. Read on to learn more.

1
Brush the coat with a good, firm natural bristle brush to keep the hair orderly and neat and to distribute the hair's natural oils. Make sure to brush all the way to the skin to remove knots and matting from the undercoat. Shiba Inus are heavy shedders.

2
Bathe only when necessary. Too much bathing removes the natural oils in your Shiba's coat. These oils make their coats water-resistant. Put cotton balls in their ears to prevent water from getting in them while bathing. Shibas have no canine odor.

Use a light coat conditioner to give extra sheen and gloss to your dog's coat.

Tips & Warnings
Shiba Inus have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.
Shibas are the smallest of this type of Japanese dog. Owners used Shiba Inus for hunting by sight and sound. Breeders developed them to hunt birds and small game.
Shibas range in height from 13 to 16 inches and in weight from 18 to 30 lb., depending on the gender.
Don't trust Shibu Inus alone with smaller animals.
Although generally a very healthy breed, Shiba Inus are somewhat susceptible to hip dysplasia and PRA. Some are also genetically pre-disposed to patellar luxation, or slipped kneecaps.
