How to Groom a Brittany Spaniel

The Brittany Spaniel is gentle, easily trainable dog. Although they are extremely obedient, they are also independently minded. Brittany Spaniels are adaptable to almost any surroundings or environments, and are good with children if they have been around them since the time they were puppies. They are extremely low maintenance, requiring a general grooming twice a month and a full grooming every 10 to 12 weeks. Read on to learn how you should.

Instructions

    • 1

Reduce long or excessive amounts of feathering. Use thinning shears to clip coat hair that won't lie flat with regular combing.

    • 2

Clip around the anus area using a #10 blade. Be very careful and make sure you don't press down on the skin.

    • 3

Bathe the dog with a mild soap or shampoo.

    • 4

Use a force dryer after the bath to get rid of extra water. Let the dog dry naturally after that without fluff drying it.

    • 5

Pin brush the dog's coat, brushing with the grain after the coat has dried. This should give the coat a sleek and shiny look that compliments this breed. Follow by brushing with a natural bristle brush to distribute the hair's natural oils throughout your dog's coat.

Tips & Warnings

  • The coat of the Brittany Spaniel should always be kept flat, not curly or wavy.

  • Feathering severely hinders a Brittany Spaniel's score in a show.

  • If your Brittany has a wavy coat, towel off the top coat with pin brushes while it's still damp.

  • Refrain from removing the ear fringe. Stick to neatening it, but don't clip it.

  • Shy away from using a high velocity dryer on a Brittany Spaniel.

  • Although the Brittany Spaniel is generally a healthy breed, many suffer from hip dysplasia and seizures.

  • Living with this dog in an apartment isn't a good idea. Brittany Spaniels need plenty of room to roam about.
