All Linux distributions made on a LiveCD that can be installed on a hard drive are called Mepis. A Mepis disc is a boot disc for troubleshooting problems within an operating system. The disc will normally include an anti-virus scanner. Mepis Linux was created because it was thought that SUSE Linux, Red Hat Linux and Mandriva Linux were too difficult for the average user.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Laptop
  • Mepis Linux
  1. Step 1

Slide the Mepis Linux CD into the tray and let your laptop boot up. Click the install link and log in as username "demo," password "demo," root user "root" and password "root."

  2. Step 2

Determine if you have any other operating system on your laptop. If so you will want to do a dual boot. If you have just one operating system you can quickly install Mepis with a click on auto-install.

  3. Step 3

Analyze what stage Mepis is at and confirm that it is now ok to destroy data on your hard disk. Mepis installation will copy over your current system files.

  4. Step 4

Install a boot loader to your master boot record on your hard drive. Confirm that it is okay.

  5. Step 5

Set up your 'username' and 'root password.' You will always use this username and password to do make administrative changes.

  6. Step 6

Select a computer name that you will be able to identify on your LAN. Check SaMBa Server for MS Networking if you want to share files on this LAN. Make sure your 'workgroup' matches other windows clients.

  7. Step 7

Solve firewall issues with Guarddog, which is provided to filter out unwanted Internet services. You are now done. Click "yes" and let your laptop shut down and eject your Mepis Linux CD.

Tips & Warnings
  • When booting from CD check your resolution—you may have to change it to a higher setting.
  • If you don't know what you are doing get someone who does—laptops are costly to repair.
